Why the breed exists
The Bichon rode the Mediterranean with sailors, who traded the merry white dogs port to port; Tenerife made it famous, the French court of Francis I and Henry III made it aristocratic, and when royal fashion moved on, the Bichon earned its keep as a street and circus performer. That résumé built the temperament: durable good cheer, love of an audience, and the ability to charm strangers on demand. Few breeds have survived by likability alone across five centuries. The Bichon is what professional friendliness looks like after five hundred years of selection.

Choosing a Bichon Frise on purpose
Every breed has its own list of required health screenings, kept by its parent club and published through OFA. A preservation breeder working in this breed tests to that list and shows you the results — including the ones that didn't go their way.
