Why the breed exists
One of the few breeds wholly made in America, and the first US breed recognized by the AKC: down from a single dog — Hooper's Judge, a bull-and-terrier brought to Boston around 1870 — and refined within a generation from fighting stock into a small, dapper companion so mannerly the fancy nicknamed it 'The American Gentleman.' The tuxedo markings fit the name. Massachusetts made it the state dog. Its entire modern intent is charm, and it was bred to that spec astonishingly fast.
The official written standard belongs to the breed's parent club.Read the official Boston Terrier standard →
Choosing a Boston Terrier on purpose
Every breed has its own list of required health screenings, kept by its parent club and published through OFA. A preservation breeder working in this breed tests to that list and shows you the results — including the ones that didn't go their way.
