Why the breed exists
The rare breed with a named inventor and a stated purpose: Louis Dobermann, a tax collector who walked dangerous rounds with cash, set out to breed himself the ideal protector. Speed, courage, intelligence, and total devotion to one person — assembled deliberately from pinschers, rottweiler stock, and sleek black-and-tan dogs of the region. The result became the world's archetypal personal-protection dog and, later, a decorated war dog of the US Marine Corps. Its watchfulness isn't a flaw to train out. It is the founding intent, standing right there in the name.

Choosing a Doberman Pinscher on purpose
Every breed has its own list of required health screenings, kept by its parent club and published through OFA. A preservation breeder working in this breed tests to that list and shows you the results — including the ones that didn't go their way.
