Why the breed exists
Descended from the mastiff-type dogs Roman legions used to drive cattle over the Alps, the breed found its name and its trade in the German market town of Rottweil, where for centuries it drove cattle to market and then guarded the proceeds — butchers famously tied their purses around the dog's neck for the walk home. Strength, endurance, and calm, confident judgment were the entire job description. A correct Rottweiler is not sharp or nervous; it is the level-headed dog a man trusted with his livestock and his money.

Choosing a Rottweiler on purpose
Every breed has its own list of required health screenings, kept by its parent club and published through OFA. A preservation breeder working in this breed tests to that list and shows you the results — including the ones that didn't go their way.
