Why the breed exists
Miniature greyhounds appear in the art of Pompeii and the tombs of Egypt; Renaissance Italian nobility so adored them that the breed took Italy's name. It is a true sighthound in fine porcelain — the double-suspension gallop, the deep chest, the hunter's eye for motion are all real and functional at fifteen inches. For two thousand years its work has been elegance, warmth, and speed in a package a noblewoman could carry. Few breeds have been loved by so many centuries in a row.

Choosing a Italian Greyhound on purpose
Every breed has its own list of required health screenings, kept by its parent club and published through OFA. A preservation breeder working in this breed tests to that list and shows you the results — including the ones that didn't go their way.
