Why the breed exists
The Pomeranian is an Arctic dog in miniature: its ancestors are the spitz sled and herding dogs of the frozen north, and the breed still wears the double coat, prick ears, and curled tail of that family. Queen Victoria fell for the small ones and bred them smaller, cutting the size dramatically and making the tiny version a national fashion. The big-dog attitude in the six-pound frame isn't confusion — it's ancestry. Nobody told the Pomeranian it stopped being a sled dog.

Choosing a Pomeranian on purpose
Every breed has its own list of required health screenings, kept by its parent club and published through OFA. A preservation breeder working in this breed tests to that list and shows you the results — including the ones that didn't go their way.
