Why the breed exists
Bred by French peasants and, the stories say, poachers — people who needed one modest-sized dog that could point, retrieve, and be fed on a working family's budget. The Brittany is the smallest of the pointing breeds and among the most efficient: leggy, light-boned, quick over ground, with an all-day motor in a 35-pound frame. Its size was economy; its versatility was necessity. It remains the working proof that greatness in a gun dog was never about being big.

Choosing a Brittany on purpose
Every breed has its own list of required health screenings, kept by its parent club and published through OFA. A preservation breeder working in this breed tests to that list and shows you the results — including the ones that didn't go their way.
