Why the breed exists
The springer is named for its job: to quarter the field ahead of the hunter and 'spring' birds into flight — then sit, mark the fall, and retrieve to hand. From the old land-spaniel stock of England, springers were the larger pups in litters that also produced cockers; the split became formal in 1902. The breed's merry, driving tail and tireless quartering pattern are the visible mechanics of the work, and its deep attachment to its person comes from a job done never more than a gunshot away from them.
The official written standard belongs to the breed's parent club.Read the official English Springer Spaniel standard →
Choosing a English Springer Spaniel on purpose
Every breed has its own list of required health screenings, kept by its parent club and published through OFA. A preservation breeder working in this breed tests to that list and shows you the results — including the ones that didn't go their way.
