Sussex Spaniel

Working heavy cover slowly, giving tongue on scent

Why the breed exists

The Sussex Spaniel was bred for the heavy clay and thick cover of southern England, where a fast-flushing dog was no use. It is low, long, heavy-boned and deliberate, and it works close and slow — and it gives tongue, which is unusual in a spaniel and was the point: in cover where a hunter cannot see the dog, a dog that tells you where it is and what it has found is doing half the job with its voice. The golden-liver coat is unique to the breed. On the tail, the American standard leaves the choice open: "The tail may be docked or undocked. If docked, the tail is 5 to 7 inches long." In the United Kingdom, where nearly the whole surviving population lives, docking is unlawful in all four nations, with narrow exemptions for certified working dogs; England's rules date from 2007. One breed, two written settlements.

The Sussex is genuinely, precariously rare. Fifteen puppies were registered in the United Kingdom in 2025, down from 24 the year before, against a Kennel Club vulnerable threshold of 300 (UK figures, as of 2025). In August 2026 the Royal Kennel Club and the Roslin Institute began a funded genetic-diversity project with the Sussex Spaniel Association, reading the DNA of up to 150 living dogs — close to the whole registered population — against the pedigree record. That is what stewardship looks like at these numbers. The right response to it is not to go and find a puppy: it is to follow the breed club, support the diversity work, and tell the story accurately.

Choosing a Sussex Spaniel on purpose

Every breed has its own list of required health screenings, kept by its parent club and published through OFA. A preservation breeder working in this breed tests to that list and shows you the results — including the ones that didn't go their way.
